Opening a Children’s Store on Block Island: A Journey of Inspiration, Community, and Play

Kelly Case
When I first dreamed of opening Minnow 02807 on Block Island, I had a vision: a place that would bring joy to children while capturing the spirit of our island’s laid-back, beachy lifestyle. Having spent over 20 years in the retail industry on Block Island, I felt a deep connection to this unique community and wanted to create something special that both locals and visitors could enjoy.

But beyond my experience in retail, my greatest inspiration for Minnow 02807 was my daughter, who was just 5 years old when the idea was born. Seeing the world through her eyes—full of curiosity, wonder, and play—sparked my desire to create a store that wasn’t just about selling toys but about providing meaningful, hands-on experiences that inspire kids to explore, create, and have fun.

The Dream of a Children’s Store
Block Island is a magical place, known for its stunning natural beauty, relaxed pace, and strong sense of community. It’s a place where families come to unwind, reconnect, and enjoy the simple pleasures of island life. I knew that if I were going to open a store here, it had to fit seamlessly into that lifestyle.

I envisioned a store that would offer more than just toys—it would provide tools for kids to engage with their surroundings. Minnow 02807 specializes in activity-based toys that spark imagination and creativity. Whether it’s a building set that challenges their problem-solving skills or an outdoor game that gets them active on the beach, I wanted to offer products that encourage children to experience the joy of hands-on play and discovery.

Building a Store with Heart
Opening a children’s store on Block Island was about more than just stocking shelves with toys. It was about curating a collection that felt intentional and meaningful. Every toy, game, and craft kit is chosen with care, ensuring that it aligns with my mission of inspiring creativity and active learning.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see kids light up as they explore the store—whether they’re piecing together a puzzle, building something new, or trying on one of our colorful bathing suits, perfectly suited for a day at the beach. Seeing that joy is what drives me, day in and day out.

 A Community Endeavor
One of the most fulfilling parts of opening Minnow 02807 has been becoming a bigger part of the Block Island community. While Block Island is a popular summer destination, it’s also a close-knit year-round community, and I wanted to create a space that would serve both groups. The store has become a destination for families who are looking for something unique, educational, and fun—whether they live on the island year-round or visit for the summer season.

Block Island has always been more than just a place to live or work—it’s a home, and the people here feel like family. That sense of connection drives everything I do at Minnow 02807, from the personalized customer service to the thoughtful products we offer. I’m deeply grateful for the support of our local community and the many families who have made Minnow 02807 a part of their island tradition.

Looking Ahead
Now, in its 4th year, Minnow 02807 has grown beyond my initial dreams. It’s become a place where kids can explore their creativity, families can find the perfect beach essentials, and everyone can experience a bit of the magic that Block Island has to offer.

Opening a children’s store on Block Island has been an incredible journey. It’s a combination of my love for retail, my passion for inspiring children, and my deep-rooted connection to this beautiful island. I’m excited for the future of Minnow 02807, and I can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us next.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our journey so far. If you haven’t yet visited us, I invite you to stop by Minnow 02807 the next time you’re on Block Island and experience the joy, imagination, and creativity that our store has to offer.
